Random Fact 10: Charge it!

April 25, 2010

To prep for a new freelance gig, I’ve been reading up on electric cars, lithium-ion batteries and charging infrastructure. It is exciting stuff. I’m not kidding: I am, after all, a nerd. For a few moments during triumphant scenes in “Revenge of the Nerds,” I teared up. Part of me wishes I were kidding.

Fill 'er up!

Random Fact this week takes advantage of my early research. “Range anxiety” is a big issue in the electric car world because prospective buyers worry that they won’t simply run out of gas, they’ll run out of juice and have no place to charge. The irony? Random Fact has learned that more than half of all drives taken in the U.S. are shorter than six miles and nearly 71 percent of U.S. households travel 40 miles or less on the average weekday.

These factoids come courtesy of the Electrification Coalition, which released a 180-page Roadmap toward more widespread adoption of electric cars and charging support for them.

Other interesting points from the Roadmap:

*Six of every 10 U.S. households drive between 21 and 30 miles on an average weekday.
*As of Fall 2009, the U.S. had fewer than 1,000 electric charge points but more than 150,000 gas stations with multiple pumps.
*Ninety percent of driving commutes are less than 30 miles each way.
*Most of the material in lithium-ion batteries, the current industry standard, is recyclable.
*Gasoline-electric hybrids accounted for less than 3 percent of new light-duty vehicle U.S. sales in 2008.

Enough numbers for now. Here’s the odd part: Weeks before this opportunity with sunpluggers.com popped up, I had a few dreams in which I was driving smallish car not unlike a Cooper Mini or a PT Cruiser – probably three similar dreams over the course of two weeks. In waking life, I drove a convertible PT Cruiser as a rental for about a week a few years back and loved it. I have vivid dreams and remember them and I cannot recall any others involving cars.

I do not know what this means. Cosmic forces could be at work.

Note: If you or someone you know is involved in any aspect of the electric vehicle industry, email me at pam@pamelacoyle.com. I am testing my domain email. To check out my first two columns for sunpluggers.com, please click on the “stories” tab. I am testing to see if I installed Google Analytics properly. Pamdemonium thanks you.
